 Welcome to New Orleans! The City is located on the Mississippi River about 110 miles upstream from the Gulf of Mexico on the southern shore of Lake Pontchartrain. The original and most visited portions of the city parallel the northern riverbank. On your first visit, you’ll find it hard to miss the European flavor of New Orleans -- from it’s architecture, food, music, hospitality and flair. Louisiana was claimed for French king Louis XIV in 1699 and is the only state that was once a French royal colony. Founded on the bend of the Mississippi River, New Orleans is known as the "Crescent City". This crescent can cause visitors and locals alike to become confused about directions. Many refer to directions as being up or down river. New Orleans has approximately 40,000 buildings listed on the National Register of Historic Places -- most located in the 120 blocks of the French Quarter. St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest active Roman Catholic Cathedral in the United States. The Old Ursuline Convent dates to 1745, and is the oldest building in the Mississippi River Valley. Exquisite antebellum mansions are located in the Garden District and Uptown. The oldest operating rail system, the New Orleans Streetcar, tranports locals and tourists from uptown to the business district along St. Charles Avenue. New Orleans is the place where jazz greats like Louis Armstrong, Buddy Bolden, Jelly Roll Morton and King Oliver first became known. Several annual festivals like the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, the French Quarter Festival and the Satchmo Summer Fest are great for enjoying the music of New Orleans. And, of course, New Orleans is visited each year by party-goers for it’s world-renown Mardi Gras event. New Orleans is known for its Creole and Cajun food, but you’ll also find many ethnic restaurants that feature foods from throughout the world.
