St. Louis Cathedral - Jackson Square
© The New Orleans Guide

St. Louis Cathedral is the oldest active cathedral in the U.S.  Established as a Parish in 1720, it is one of the foremost tourist attractions in the Jackson Square section of the French Quarter.  Here the notorious voodoo queen Marie Laveau was baptized and married and Andrew Jackson laid his sword on the altar in thanks for victory at the Battle of New Orleans.

The St. Louis Cathedral is now the official seat for the Archdiocese of New Orleans. This striking architectural structure was dedicated in 1851 - the third of two former attempts. The present cathedral retains the main isle: constructed of  black and white marble, it is the only thing remaining from the original structure of 1720. The impressive cathedral  is build of wood and stucco and graced with a trio of spires - one of which one holds a central clock that keeps the locals on time.
