Canal Street is the famous northern boundary for the French Quarter, the oldest neighborhood in New Orleans.  It was once the location for a canal that was to connect the Mississippi River to Lake Pontchartrain.  A riverfront ferry at the east shore of Canal Street takes passengers to Algiers across the river.   West Canal is known for being the location of a number of old cemeteries.
