Destrehan is the oldest documented plantation in the lower Mississippi Valley.  Built in 1787, it was seized by the union during the Civil War but was returned to the family afterwards.  In the mid 1900s it fell into neglect but was saved and restored by the River Road Historical Society, who now owns it.  The plantation museum is open for tours daily, and features docents dressed in historically accurate period costumes. Demonstrations of period crafts such as candle making, dyeing with indigo, calligraphy and early construction techniques give visitors a glimpse of the talents needed in the daily workings of a plantation.  The annual Fall Festival, held the second full weekend in November is the primary fund raising event of the Society. Revenue from the event, now in its 30th year, has funded restoration and the expansion of the interpretative site.

Directions - Destrehan Plantation is located a half-mile from from the Destrehan Bridge on Hwy. 48 (River Road). Located 8 miles from New Orleans International Airport. Easily accessible from I-10 and Hwy. 61 by taking I-310 and exiting at Hwy. 48 (River Road).
