According to legend, Magazine Street was named for a "magazin", a warehouse built to house products awaiting export.  The success of New Orleans trade from its earliest times contributed to the area's development along the river as an international port.  The gradual progression of architectural styles along Magazine Street shows the growth over time as depicted by mid-nineteenth century Greek Revival style down river, and Victorian shotgun houses trimmed with gingerbread millwork upriver.

Today, the six mile stretch between Canal Street and Audubon Park and Zoological Gardens is known as 'Magazine Street'.   Magazine Street is lined with appealing specialty shops, fabulous boutiques and century-old warehouses selling housewares, pottery; unfinished, country and period furniture, chandeliers; clothing, books, fine papers, linens, glass, silly toys, china, soaps and incense, antiques from the late 1800s, art, food, clothing and desirable jewelry ? costume and the real thing. Lots of best little buys and excellent quality items show (at every price) to impress shoppers. Between browsing, enjoy restaurant or coffee house breaks. Directions:

by Car: from the French Quarter, enjoy an easy drive from Decatur across Canal and you are there.  Keep going to Audubon Park.  Street parking is available.
by Bus: the Magazine Street bus stops at Canal Street across from the Marriott Hotel.
